JFK to Times Square by Subway
The subway is the most affordable way to reach Times Square from JFK. While not a direct route, it combines the AirTrain and NYC Subway Line E for a relatively smooth trip.
From your terminal, board the AirTrain Jamaica Line (Red Line), operating 24/7 every 7–15 minutes, and ride to Jamaica Station (15 minutes). Follow the signs to Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue/JFK Airport Subway Station and take Subway Line E toward World Trade Center. After about 41 minutes, get off at 42 St – Port Authority Bus Terminal, just a 3-minute walk from Times Square. The total trip takes about an hour.
You can also take the Howard Beach AirTrain Line (Green Line) to Howard Beach Station and board Subway Line A toward 42 St – Port Authority Bus Terminal, but this route has more stops and takes longer.
Cost of Subway Transfer
The AirTrain is free only for in-airport transfers; to reach Jamaica or Howard Beach, the fare is 8$/8€. The subway ticket costs 2.75$/2.75€, and a Metrocard (1$/1€) is required for both. Metrocards are rechargeable and valid on all NYC subways and buses. Tickets are sold at Jamaica Station ticket machines (subway machines, not LIRR ones) and can be paid by cash, card, or mobile wallet. Thus, the total fare is 10.75$/10.75€ plus the Metrocard fee.
Our Tip 1: Jamaica Station is crowded; allow extra time for ticket purchase.
Our Tip 2: Try to board near the front of Subway Line E — it’s closer to the exit at 42 St.
Our Tip 3: Keep valuables secure, as subways can get crowded.
JFK to Times Square by Train
The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) offers a faster but more expensive option. Take the AirTrain to Howard Beach Station (15 minutes), then board the LIRR to Penn Station (20 minutes). From there, you can either walk 0.5 miles (0.8 km) to Times Square or take one stop on the subway to Times Sq–42 St.
During peak hours (6:00–10:00 am on weekdays), LIRR tickets cost 10.75$/10.75€. Off-peak and weekends, the fare drops to 7.75$/7.75€. Adding the 8$/8€ AirTrain ticket and 1$/1€ Metrocard fee, the total comes to 18.75$/18.75€ during rush hours or 15.75$/15.75€ off-peak.
Our Tip 1: Kids under 6 travel free; ages 6–12 pay half fare.
Our Tip 2: Always keep your ticket — conductors perform random checks.
Our Tip 3: LIRR trains run every 3–20 minutes depending on the time of day.
